Dermatovenereology
Dermatovenereology is a science that is concerned with studying of the skin, its adnexa and visible mucous membranes, pathology and treatments.
- The skin has numerous functions:
- Protective (outside barrier)
- Mechanical (supportive)
- Immunological (the skin is the biggest immunological organ)
- Sensor (sense of touch)
- Synthesis of D vitamin
- Endocrine
- Thermo regulative affects social and sexual communication
The skin is influenced with several external factors: allergens, irritants, chemicals, medicine, sunrays, heat, cold, infections and trauma. Internal factors are also very important, as the skin is a mirror of processes going on at our body and soul.
In addition, skin diseases effect our organism and can be a cause for suffering: inadequacy for work (hand eczema – disturbances of comfort, pain and itching), depression, suicide, difficult social communication and some dermatosis can even have a fatal outcome.
Skin diseases are very common. It counts up to 10% of all patients seeking help at primary health institutions.
Dermatology as a science has widely developed during the last decades.
